Abstract

Safflower oil was combined with hexane to form a mixture with concentration of 15, 20 and 25% by mass oil in order to determine the effect of hexane-oil ratio and temperature on the evaporation rate and generate evaporation curves that display the behavior or the solution during evaporation. The solutions were boiled using a water bath with temperatures of 80, 90 and 100 °C and the volume of hexane recovered were measured at 2-minute time intervals.

Evaporation rates were determined graphically along the plot of hexane recovered as a function of time. The rates were graphed against time, along with concentration and temperature of the solution. These evaporation curves showed a majority trend of having transient stages, rising, constant and falling rate periods.

Statistical computations show that hexane-oil ratio had no significant effect on the constant evaporation rate, % hexane recovery and final oil purity. Increasing the bath temperature significantly increased the evaporation rate, % hexane recovery and oil purity. Increasing levels treatments decreased total evaporation time.

The maximum evaporation rate obtained was 15.5 ml/min, from boiling 15% solution at 100 °C. The final oil solution contained at most 86% by mass oil, from boiling 20% solution at 100 °C for 46 minutes.

The evaporation rate was plotted against hexane content to determine the time to evaporate given miscella up to a desired concentration.
