Abstract

The Sugar and Molasses Distribution System (SDS) used by the Canlubang Sugar Estate (CSE) to determine such information as the sugar content of a cane delivery, the theoretical sugar and molasses due cane, and how the final products will be divided between the planter and the factory, utilizes repetitive manual calculations and rigorous equations, or tables prepared from them, which compromises accuracy and efficiency.
An algorithm was designed from the operating procedures of the SDS and a program/model was constructed and developed from this algorithm. Borland’s Turbo Pascal 5.0 was used as the programming language.
The program accepts such data as weights, estimated trash content, first expressed juice brix and pol, and factory constants and pertinent laboratory results which are then processed to estimate cane sugar content, determine the theoretical and actual sugar and molasses due for a specified cane delivery, and compute actual planter and miller shares of final products. Other program functions include summarization of all delivery reports for a single day, filing and printing of report results, construction of a sugar distribution table, and evaluation of data entries and results from which errors are detected.
The program can process relatively more information faster and more accurately, doing away with use of prepared tables and tediously repetitive manual calculations. Also, errors can be more easily avoided and traced, and manpower for deskwork involving the computational procedures can be reduced.
