Abstract

A laboratory scale continuous counter current solid extractor was designed, fabricated and tested. The results of the preliminary test was used to evaluate the extraction efficiency of the said equipment.

The solid extractor involved the extraction of crude oil from copra meal using 95% by volume ethyl alcohol. Results showed that at a working temperature of 30 °C, the extraction efficiency is 21.46% at a total crude oil content of copra meal equal to 9.36%.

It is recommended that further testing must be made using the operating conditions at solvent’s boiling point of 82 °C using an enclosed extractor in view of optimizing the operation of the extractor.
