Abstract

A laboratory-scale continuous thickener was designed, fabricated, and preliminary tested. Its design using published theoretical approaches was based on the batch settling characteristics of CaO solids suspended in water. The fabricated equipment consists of the main components: settling tank, overflow launder and piping, underflow withdrawal port, feed system, and rotating rake assembly.

To test for the validity of the calculations on the design, the unit was ran using 5% solids of CaO-H20 suspension. Feeding and overflow removal was done continuously while thickened sludge withdrawal was made intermittently. No steady state was achieved of the process because of the inconsistency of the flowrate of feed and the intermittent withdrawal of the underflow as no pumping assembly was installed with the unit.

Further tests were also made with varying feed rates and concentrations, as well as with a filter mud slurry, in an attempt to study the mechanism of continuous thickening and to provide for basis on the operating conditions for any subsequent evaluations of solid-liquid separations using the fabricated unit.
