Abstract

A sparger type laboratory scale repeated batch fermentor with an operating volume of 30 liters and retention time of 16 hours was designed, fabricated and preliminary tested. During the testing the fermentor was used to produce ethanol from sugar cane molasses, and its retention time was extended to 48 hours.

The fabricated fermentor is made of gauge 16 stainless steel. Its primary cylinder has an inside diameter of 34.19 cm and height of 39.95 cm. It has a jacket which functions as the control for temperature and its inside diameter is 39.67 cm. Its height is 43.03 cm.

Two runs of Ethanol Fermentation were conducted using Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Analysis of the original molasses showed that it obtained 31.0368 % sucrose and 21.2 % reducing sugars. residual sugars in the molasses after fermentation was analyzed to be about 2.023 % only, giving the fermentor an average efficiency of 77.59 % based on residual sugar of the beer.
