Abstract

A fluid flow apparatus was designed, fabricated at the AMDP Machine Shop and tested at the Chemical Engineering Unit Operations Laboratory. It aims to determine the pressure drop across fittings, across an orifice and along the pipelength.

The whole apparatus consists of three tanks which are made of GI sheets. The orifice, with a hole diameter of 0.75″, was placed along a 2″ GI pipeline while the 90° elbow, globe valve and union were placed along the 1″ GI pipeline.

Pressure drop across the orifice, pipe fittings and along the pipe length were determined with the use of a manometer. Results show that pressure drop increases with increasing fluid velocity. Pressure drop also increases with increasing pipe length. Theoretical calculations of the manometer readings based on the actual velocity show very minimal difference with the actual readings.

Refinements of the apparatus were suggested to facilitate testing and minimize water losses.
