Abstract

A gas-fired distilling apparatus using shell and tube condenser and double tube heat economizer was designed, fabricated and tested.

The efficiencies of the vaporizer and condenser with and without the heat economizer were experimentally determined. The overall heat transfer coefficient of the apparatus was calculated.

Results showed that without the economizer, the efficiency of the vaporizer was 26.56%. This value increased to 31.42% when the economizer was used. The overall efficiencies of the apparatus with and without the economizer were 31.63% and 37.48%, respectively. The overall heat transfer coefficient of the vaporizer was 2.23 Btu/hft2°F but for the condenser it was 93.36 Btu/hft2°F.

Distilled water production was 0.85 gallons per hour or only 28.33% of the theoretical. This low production capacity was attributed the limited capacity of the burner used in the experiment. It is predicted that the distilled water production will approach the theoretical if a higher burner capacity will be used.

The fuel consumption was found to be 1.24 lb LPG per gallon of distilled water.
