Abstract

The gas fired water distiller with air-cooled condenser and feed water heater was designed, fabricated and tested at the Civil Engineering Laboratory, CEAT, UPLB.

The water tube, extending the heat transfer area of the boiler, increased both the steam heat and thermal efficiency of the boiler from 32.80 % to 37.84 % and 32.17 % to 35.59 %, respectively.

The computed feed water heater over-all heat transfer coefficient was 79.39 BTU/hr ft² °F.

The presence of water tube and feed water heater increased distilled water production from 3.80 L/hr to 4.02 L/hr and decreased gas utilization from 0.13 to 0.15 kg LPG per liter of distilled water. However, these slightly decreased the over-all heat transfer coefficient of the boiler and air-cooled condenser from 3.60 to 3.51 BTU/hr ft² °F and from 8.98 to 8.42 BTU/hr ft²

Only 4.02 L/hr or 53.10 % of the target production was obtained. This may be due to limited capacity of the burner used.

Operating cost of the apparatus is 27.45 % lower than the conventional water-cooled condenser and electrically fired boiler.
