Abstract

A laboratory scale fluidized bed was designed, fabricated and tested. The results obtained are used to verify existing principles of fluidization.

The materials tested were 0.2018 in. Sodium alginate of varying weights (100 g and 200 g) and 200 g of 0.1306 in. Sago. Both materials observed the same pattern of bed expansion. Smooth fluidization was observed with Sodium alginate. Sodium alginate of heavier weight shows larger deviations in the pressure-drop. Sago did not give a good relationship between pressure-drop and the fluid velocity.

Data obtained from the fluidization of Sago and Sodium alginate shows conformity with the findings of previous investigators. The results drive at a conclusion that the pressure drop over the unit at fluidized condition is essentially equal to the weight of the solids it contains. It is recommended that further studies be made on this field like varying the size of the diameter of the particle and be able to derive a correlation based on the data obtained.
