Abstract

A laboratory scale sieve-plate distilling column was designed to produce a 70 mole percent ethanol distillate from a 10 mole percent ethanol solution.

The equipment was fabricated at the DAMET shop and tested together with a single pass shell-and-tube condenser. Open steam was used instead of a reboiler as heat source.

Results showed that the designed distilling column operated at a low efficiency (27.27 %) due to some limitations during the testing.

Further recommendations are needed to improve the operating condition of the distilling column.
