Abstract

Using three different rotational speeds of 1000, 2000, and 2500 rpm, the optimum conditions for centrifugal separation of coconut oil-water moisture of four varying ratios (50:50, 70:30, 80:20 and 90:10) were determined. The sample mixture, prepared by mixing appropriate amounts of coconut oil and water together in a glass cylindrical bottle, produced a milky-white emulsion. The efficiency of phase separation was determined based on percentage of coconut oil recovery, separation time, and moisture content of coconut oil.

For all three speeds, (80:20) gave the highest percentage of oil recovery, while (50:50) gave the lowest. At 1000, 2000 and 2500 rpm, the percent oil recovery for (80:20) were 92.77 %, 94.48 %, and 97.04 % respectively. The percent oil recovery for (50:50) at 1000 rpm was 91.24 % and 92,77 %, 94.48%, and 97.04 % respectively. The percent oil recovery for (50:50) at 1000 rpm was 91.24 % and 92.60 % at 2000 and 2500 rpm. For all three speeds, the optimum centrifugation time for (70:30), (80:20) and (90:10) was 40 minutes. While for (50:50) was 20 minutes at 1000 and 2000 rpm, and 10 minutes at 2500 rpm. The moisture content after centrifugation decreased, indicating higher purity of coconut oil. At 1000 rpm, (50:50) gave the lowest moisture content (0.213 %), while (90:10) the highest (0.359 %). At 2000 rpm, (50:50) gave the lowest (0.229 %) while(70:30) the highest (0.369 %). At 2500 rpm, (80:20) gave the lowest (0.179 %) while (70:30) the highest (0.501 %). The results on the determination of relative centrifugal force (RCF) showed that increasing the rotational speed also increased the RCF. At 1000, 2000 and 2500 rpm, the RCF values were 212G, 850G and 1328G respectively. The (80:20) ratio centrifuged at 2500 rpm for 40 minutes was found most suitable for the separation of coconut oil-water mixture.
