Abstract

Abattoir wastewater from Los Baños Slaughterhouse was analyzed for its pollutional characteristics before and after water hyacinth and algae treatment in a 10 ft³ oxidation pond.

After 6 days of incubation, COD for the algal treated wastewater decreased from 690 mg/L to 298 mg/L. For the water hyacinth treatment, the decrease was from 690 mg/L to 306 mg/L. These correspond to 56.81 % and 55.65 % decrease, respectively. The control treatment gave 38.70 % decrease in COD.

Variation in DO for the two treatments showed results that are consistent with past studies. The effect of the temperature on DO of the wastewater was discussed.

Slaughterhouse wastewater contaminated with sanitizing agents did not show positive results to water hyacinth and algal treatments. Retention time longer than 6 days may prove effective in reducing the COD values of this wastewater to acceptable level.
