Abstract

Paint manufacturing wastewater (PMW) is considered difficult to treat due to its persistence and toxicity. In recent years, electrochemical oxidation has become an alternative in treating toxic wastewaters. Electrolyzed water (EW) is a strong oxidizing
solution containing chlorine and was utilized in this study to treat PMW. Maximum of 84.63% decolorization and 87.69% COD reduction were achieved. A 2³ factorial design showed that electrolysis time and ratio had significant negative and positive effects on pH, respectively. All three factors, namely electrolysis time, ratio, and reaction time, including their interactions, had significant effects on color. For COD, ratio and reaction time had significant positive effects. The treatment combination of 100 min. electrolysis time, 1:1 PMW-EW ratio, and six-hour reaction time was considered the most efficient, thus it was used for the kinetic study. The decolorization of PMW upon addition of EW has an order of 1.4 and kinetic constant 0.01075 abs⁻⁰?⁴·min-1 while COD reduction has an order of 4.5 and kinetic constant of 1.43×10⁻¹⁷ L³?⁵/mg³?⁵·min.
