Abstract

Methylene blue (MB) is one of the dyes in industrial effluents that cause pollution problems in the bodies of water. At the same time, heaps of bagasse fly ash (BFA) keep on piling in the dumping sites of sugar milling plants and is a serious environmental problem because of its adverse effects to both people, land and air. This study focused on the adsorption of MB using BFA as adsorbent. Solution pH was studied at levels 4 and 10, initial dye concentration at 100 and 500 ppm while BFA loading was studied at 2.5 and 10 g/L. Based on the results, pH, initial dye concentration, BFA loading, the interaction of pH and BFA loading and the interaction of pH, initial dye concentration and BFA loading have significant effects on equilibrium time while all factors and all interactions have significant effects on Qe. The combination of parameters that resulted to the shortest equilibrium time (4 hours) and highest Qe (36.8 mg/g) is pH 4, 100 ppm initial dye concentration and 10 g/L BFA loading. The integral method was used in the kinetics study and resulted to a rate law of first order kinetic model with an average first order rate constant of 0.6732 hr⁻¹. On the other hand, Langmuir Isotherm best describes the adsorption process with R²= 0.9798 and Qmax = 52.083 mg/g.
