Abstract

A parametric study on the decolorization of Congo red dye using bagasse bottom ash was conducted using a 2ᵏ factorial design. The results of the experiment indicated that bagasse bottom ash could be used effectively as an adsorbent for solutions containing Congo red dye. The effect of process variables i.e., temperature (20 or 50 °C), contact time (30 or 60 minutes), and initial dye concentration (5 or 30 mg/L) on the percent dye removal were determined using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The parametric study indicated that only temperature, contact time, and the interaction between temperature and contact time had significant positive effects on the percent dye removal, with initial dye concentration having the largest effect. Other factors and interactions were not significant. The highest percent dye removal of 85.6% was achieved at 50 °C, 60 minutes, and 30 mg/L while the lowest removal of 30.4% was achieved at 20 °C, 30 minutes, and 5 mg/L. Adsorption isotherms (Langmuir and Freundlich) were used to evaluate the adsorption mechanism. The results of the isotherm experiments showed that the adsorption fits better in the Langmuir isotherm (with R² = 0.9882), indicating a monolayer and homogeneous adsorption. The value of Qₘₐₓ was found to be 9.5 mg/g.
