Abstract

With the increase in the production of e-waste, extraction of metals from waste printed circuit boards (PCBs) have been found to be a way to recycle them. This study selectively extracted iron and copper from waste PCBs by two-stage leaching using sulfuric acid and nitric acid. Only the second stage leaching was done in this study but the data from in the first stage was obtained from a previous study. Factor screening was done using the Plackett Burman Design in which 10 factors were considered that produced 20 runs. From the AAS analysis, the highest percent extraction of iron obtained in the first stage leaching was 50.895 % while for the second stage leaching, 93.82 % of copper was extracted. Sulfuric acid was used in the first stage because it can dissolve more iron than copper while nitric acid was used in the second stage to completely extract the remaining copper. The percent of extracted copper increases with an increase in temperature, time, particle size, impeller speed, and nitric acid concentration. On the other hand, an increase in the PCB loading decreases the percent extraction of copper. From the analysis of variance, it was deemed that only the nitric acid concentration was a significant factor that affects the percent extraction of copper.
