Abstract

The experiment is an evaluation of a photoreactor that is fabricated for the decolorization of coffee effluent wastewater. Titanium dioxide was immobilized into activated carbon via dip-coating method. Experiment was done using 2k factorial design utilizing the variables in terms of amount of TiO2-immobilized activated carbon, size of activated carbon pellets, and the initial amount of coffee effluent in simulated wastewater. Experiments were run in 1hour irradiation time frame for 4 liters of coffee wastewater. Resulting decolorization was analyzed using 405 nm wavelength settings on a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Analysis of variation results showed AC size, effluent loading, interaction effect between AC size and loading and interaction effect between AC size and effluent loading were significant variables for coffee decolorization. Experiment showed that the highest decolorization was achieved at the following parameters: 6×12 AC size, 100 g AC-immobilized TiO2 loading, and 1400 ppm initial concentration of coffee effluent in the wastewater. The percent decolorization reached 16.71%.
