The perseverance and hard work of our graduating MS students paid off despite the global pandemic, as they were recognized during the 15th Hooding and Recognition Ceremonies of the UPLB Graduate School held virtually on August 6, 2021. The MS Chemical Engineering program produced five (5) graduates this academic year, two of them were given academic awards. Engr. Rona Joyce B. Landoy received the Academic Excellence Award while Engr. Eros Paul V. Estante received the Academic Achievement Award. During the welcome remarks of the Hooding Ceremony, UPLB Chancellor Jose Camacho, Jr. applauded the graduates for persevering and emerging victoriously despite the difficulties and challenges they faced in the new normal. The guest speaker, UP Baguio Chancellor Corazon L. Abansi exhorted the graduates, “Whether you take on an expert’s role or a leadership role, we inherited from UPLB a deeply ingrained sense of service to a wider community, a clear set of principles, an obligation to offer one’s best, a refusal to accept the easy or the expedient path, a duty to truth, honor and excellence. While our profession and passion might change throughout our career, we are guided by the life lessons from the education we got from our beloved UPLB. Do not forget to give back to our alma mater and give back better.” Finally, Jabez Joshua M. Flores, a PhD in Environmental Science graduate, on behalf of the graduates, expressed gratitude to the people who have been part of their “grad school” journey. He also reminded his fellow graduates that “Grad school is not just about hardship and challenges. It’s also about having faith and believing that we can contribute something significant in this world. We’re in grad school for a reason and may that reason be the fire that burns in your heart.”
