Abstract

The effect of extraction time and seed-solvent ratio on extraction of crude oil from safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) seeds using hexane as solvent was studied. The seeds used contained an average oil and moisture content of 20.72% and 8.12% by mass, respectively. Underflow and overflow curves for spent seeds-miscella equilibrium which can be used for the design of a continuous extraction process were also plotted from the collected data.

Varying values of seed-solvent ratio, g/ml (0.8:1.0, 1.0:1.0, 1.2:1.0 1 and 1.4:1.0) and contact time (80, 100 and 120 minutes) combinations were tested for its effect on % oil recovery or % extraction efficiency. Results showed that this ranges from 80.51 to 84.17, 80.59 to 87.19, 80.09 to 87.42 and 85.68 to 86.19 for seed-solvent ratio of 0.8:1.0, 1.0:1.0, 1.2:1.0 and 1.4:1.0 respectively.

It was observed that as the extraction time increased, the percentage of oil recovered also increased. However, analysis of variance (ANOVA) using F-test showed that at α = 5%, there is no significant effect in varying the values of the seed-solvent ratio and contact time. The contact times used were too long and the oil left in the seeds was approaching equilibrium.
