Abstract

Effluents from the textile industry, which contains various dyes, can adversely affect the receiving water bodies. These dyes are toxic and persistent, and difficult to degrade. Even at low concentrations, these dyes give a strong, evident color to the effluent. Several studies about the use of electrolyzed water, a free chlorine-rich oxidizing agent, on the decolorization of different dye solutions were compared and analyzed. The methodologies of these studies involved the generation of the electrolyzed water, the preparation of different dye solutions, setting values for the parameters observed, the decolorization reaction procedure, and the time profiling of the decolorization reaction. The results of the parametric studies were compared and discussed. The response considered in the parametric studies was the mass of dye decolorized per mass of free chlorine in the electrolyzed water. The percent decolorization was also calculated for each response. The results of the kinetic studies were also presented. In the abundance of time and resources, it was suggested to conduct new parametric studies using agitation, electrolysis time, initial dye concentration, electrolyzed water to dye solution volume ratio, reaction time, and temperature. The performance of optimization studies was suggested before proceeding to kinetic studies. A pilot-scale reactor was designed using the conditions in the parametric studies that yielded the highest dye removal per free chorine content. The tank volume of the designed reactor was 120 L, while the total volumetric flow rate of entering stream was 0.3754 L/min. The tank diameter and height were 50.31 cm and 60.37 cm, respectively. The impeller diameter was 16.77 cm, while the impeller fan width and height were 4.19 cm and 3.35 cm, respectively. A kinetic study using optimized conditions was recommended as basis for the reactor design to maximize the decolorization while avoiding overdesigning to save cost.
