Abstract

A “chimney dryer” made of stainless steel, was designed and fabricated, and used in the drying of handmade papers having thicknesses of 0.26 mm and 0.40 mm. This dryer together with two other existing conventional methods, solar and air drying, was used test which methods would provide a shorter drying time for handmade papers. To determine the effect of these three methods on the paper sheets, tear, burst and tensile strengths of the paper samples were likewise analyzed.

Results showed that there were no significant differences in the strength of papers dried using the three methods. Therefore, using the “chimney dryer” will have not changed the quality of paper produced. However, with regards drying time, it was found that the developed method accelerated drying time, clearly, showing its superiority over the two existing methods.

Furthermore, the drying rate curve for chimney drying had the steepest slope, meaning the drying rate of chimney drying at any given moisture content was higher than that of solar and air drying methods.
