Petroleum nut tree (Pittosporum resiniferum Hemsl.) which naturally occurs in the Philippines bears fruit containing fuel and chemical additive components. It is also known to have medicinal value. In this study, oil from fruits of petroleum nut (without seeds) was extracted using isopropanol as solvent. Flask level soaking was used to determine the effects of temperature (40 ̊C and 60 ̊C), solvent to nut ratio (2 mL/g and 5 mL/g) and soaking time (8 hours and 16 hours) on oil yield. The solvent was simply boiled off under the fumehood to recover the oil. Results showed that the highest oil yield of 11.73% (w/w) was obtained from extraction operated at 60 ̊C, 2 mL isopropanol/gram of nut, and 16 hours of soaking. All parameters exhibited a positive relation with oil yield, that is as one is increased, oil yield also increased. Only the interaction between temperature and soaking time had significant effect on oil yield. Soxhlet extraction was used to determine the maximum amount of extractable oil which was 34.20% (w/w). The oil yield obtained from soaking method was lower than the oil yield obtained from Soxhlet method but it is higher than the oil yield from using common method of pressing and repressing.
