Abstract

The effluent generated from monosodium glutamate (MSG) manufacturing plants is one of the most intractable fermentative wastewater to treat with its high concentration of organic pollutants. The treatment of such wastewater has become a big challenge since conventional biological treatment methods are unable to handle its high color (190,500 PCU) and COD (227,000 mg/L) content. The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the heterogeneous Fenton process using pyrite on the treatment of MSG wastewater using a two-level factorial design. The effects of initial pH (3 and 6), pyrite dosage (5 and 10 g/L), and initial H2O2 concentration (78 and 392 mM) on the COD removal and decolorization of the wastewater were examined. The initial pH, H₂O₂ concentration, and their interaction were found to be the significant factors. It was observed that at low pH and low H₂O₂ concentration, high COD removal occurred, while high decolorization occurred at high pH and high H₂O₂ concentration. The highest COD removal efficiency of 44.5% was observed at pH 3, 10 g/L pyrite dosage, and 78 mM H₂O₂ concentration, while the highest decolorization efficiency of 96.7% was observed at pH 6, 10 g/L pyrite dosage, and 392 mM H₂O₂ concentration. Although the final pH, color, and COD of the treated wastewater did not comply with the effluent standards based on DAO 2016-08 for Class C water bodies, the heterogeneous Fenton process was able to reduce the COD and color of the MSG wastewater, considering its high strength and high color.
